Recently, a video shot on a camera phone made its way to youtube.com that depicted events in the computer science lab of UCLA. Apparently a young man of Middle Eastern extraction refused to show ID to the campus "security" forces.
What ensued is truly frightening.
The video itself isn't much. You really can't see anything and view the incident from the periphery of a crowd, which itself attempts to intervene.
Now, don't get me wrong: police, and to a lesser extent "security", have a difficult job. However, there is no excuse for this type of behavior. You can hear the prominent voice of one of the security "officers" telling this student to "stand up" repeatedly.
You may feel that this is reasonable, given the student's initial statements in the video, in which he refuses to leave the facility.
However, if you have ever been "tazed" with 50,000 volts of electricity, you will find it extremely difficult to comply with such a directive. Of course, the "mild mannered" officer knows this quite well but insists anyway and inflicts additional torture for "noncompliance."
Apparently, the phrase "We had to destroy the village in order to save it." makes all too much sense to this "officer."
I encourage you, however, to turn up the volume and close your eyes.
Decide for yourself whether the "officer's" action is right or wrong.
But I know what I believe: WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. This "officer" dishonored his profession, his colleagues and his country.
