A 35ft-tall, 13-and-a-half-ton Damien Hirst statue revealing the insides of a pregnant woman has been unveiled at the Royal Academy of Arts in London.
The Virgin Mother has layers removed on one side to reveal the foetus and the woman's skull, muscles and tissue.
I generally like Hirst's work, but part of me (the part growing out of the left side of my belly: you know, with the tentacles that I always complain of?) thinks the shock art approach is played out. Wait until the fundies get beyond the whole gay marriage bugaboo to find a new way to goose their sensibilities. Besides, what fun is it picking on the Catholics, who are wrapped up in this DaVinci Code nonsense? You'd get more mileage out of the Southern Baptists.
